04.11.2017 Preveza
Samedi 4 novembre 2017
Red
sky in the morning sailor take warning.
Saturday, November 4,
2017
The wind got up a
little last night and Hera II is pushed against the dock. Jens got up, moved a
fender and put one more rope. The Canadians (from Calgary, but their boat is
registered in Vancouver) leave around 9 am. We are going for a walk around the
bay, it could be idyllic, tall trees making shade, but it's messy. We leave at
about 11 am, the wind has calmed so we are motoring, and it will be a beautiful
day. We pass Skorpios, the private island that belonged to Onassis. Large signs
warn that it is private and that nobody is allowed to go ashore. We decide to
anchor in a bay, Varko Bay, on the mainland, for lunch. Swimming, the water is
a little cooler, 20, 2 ⁰. We take our time, coffee, rest and leave at 3 pm. We
are going to enter the Lefkas Canal, and at the end of the canal a swing bridge
opens every hour. The canal is well marked, red buoys and green buoys. We have
to slow down so we don’t get to the bridge too early, there is no waiting
pontoon, nothing. We arrive at 16:55 and the bridge rotates at 17:00. We
continue, we still have 7 miles to Preveza and the night falls quickly now. We
admire a beautiful sunset with the sky very red. For those who have followed my
previous blogs, it will be a repetition, but I put it anyway: "Red sky at
night sailor's delight. Red sky in the morning sailor take warning”. We arrive
at Preveza at 6:30 pm, in the dark, but everything is well marked, no problem.
Some sailboats are along and others perpendicular to the dock, we are, of
course, along the dock. The wind has risen, it pushes us towards the quay and a
chop makes Hera II move. A guy comes to say hello, it's the captain of the
catamaran "Polo", that we met in Kioni. Dinner of what we have left
and in bed early. Tomorrow, cleaning of the boat and Monday Hera II is put on
land, the season is over for 2017.
