30.10.2017 Ile de Pera Pigadhi/Pera Pigadhi Island

Lundi 30 octobre 2017

We leave Argostoli at 07:45 in a calm and gray weather, but when we leave the fjord, a long swell of about one meter arrives from the south-west and makes Hera II roll. It's funny, we have the swell of ¾ back and a very light wind from the front. We can’t put the jib and Hera II is rolling. We take the same way as when we came, around south Kefalonia. We see again Cape Mounda, Scala, Cape Kapri, and pass Poros just as the yellow ferry comes out. Now, it's quiet, no more swell. And despite these changes of direction, we always have the wind, weak, from the front, so we are motoring. The sun is coming out and it's going to be a nice day. We had thought of going to Sami, on the island of Cephalonia but we change our mind on the way. There is a small island east of Ithaca where you can only go in calm weather and today it’s the case so we must take the opportunity. This island is called Pera Pigadhi, is uninhabited and even has a small dock. But there is a problem! According to Rod Heikell's guide, this island is infested with big, bold rats, which don’t hesitate to get on the boats. We go there anyway. The dock is empty, the water clear and calm, it’s idyllic and we see some goats that escape when we arrive. We swim, take a little walk, it is almost impenetrable and yet we see ruins of walls, there was a military garrison here in the old days. And, important operation, we plug all the holes and possible access for rats on the boat. We dine outside, it's beautiful and quiet, and have a visitor: a cat who is, of course, welcome, we give him a box of sardines and he stays a long time near the boat. We read a bit and go to sleep, for the moment we have not seen a single rat.
